Inn on the Lake – Main Lake fish survey – March 2024

In March 2024 a fish survey was carried out by AE Fisheries on the Main Lake at the Inn on the Lake. Their report is as follows:

“The Lake is clean and tidy and whilst the access is tricky for heavy equipment, we managed to get our kit in and used a combination of netting and electrofishing.

The vast Norfolk reed beds were alive with Carp. There were at least 80 carp averaging mid to upper doubles present. Whilst they won’t spend all of their time in the reeds, they cause a problem for angling. We caught lots of carp and all were in very good condition.

I would do as much as possible to combat the encroaching reeds. Its difficult as you have limited access, and the roots of the reeds will be difficult to remove without machinery. Annual raking and cutting would help.

We caught very little netting the main part of the open water, this was mainly due to weed.

It is clear that cormorant’s fish the lake daily.

The swims are nice, but I would encourage more marginal planting. This helps for a number of reasons. It provides erosion protection, provides safe habitat for fry, and the more plants you have (iris, carex etc. are more porous and safer than Norfolk reed) the better for water quality.

Considering the location, the lake is clean and well kept. The fish stocks are plentiful, although the smaller silver fish will have taken a battering from the birds, as is the same countrywide.

I would be supplementary feeding. 25kg per week would see improvements in recruitment and growth potential.

I would not apply chalk as this will make the weed even worse in this case.
