Inn on the Lake – Fish survey – December 2024

In December 2024 a fish survey was carried out by AE Fisheries at the Inn on the Lake. Their report is as follows:

“Carrying on from my last notes after our initial meeting at the Inn on The Lake.
The main lake has the encroaching Norfolk reed bed that we discussed last visit.

The Carp love it in there, and whilst I wouldn’t remove it completely as it provides
good habitat, I would reduce it buy half if possible to remove roots.

The spaces between swims are full of tree roots making it difficult to prepare and
plant marginals bare rooted, however the use of Coir rolls would make sense.

These are 3-5m hessian type sausages filled with 18 plant roots that can simply
be dropped in, floated around and pinned to bare margins. If the club installed
them around the lake, this would create better habitat, improve water quality
and in future, provide better fishing.

The Middle lake is tricky to net due to a semi submerged underwater pipe that
feeds the waterfall. We caught a dozen good carp to over 20lb. The cormorants
are heavily reducing numbers of juveniles. Feeding is important to maintain the
good work already done here. The area behind the island is full of debris and lots
of line.

The small stock pond has some great carp growing on, and plenty of Roach and a
few Rudd. Whilst it is very shallow, it is a useful pond which the club are making
the most of.

I would advise calcium carbonate applications annually to improve water quality
further, as discussed.

The general condition of all fish caught was good, and the club have done well to
maintain the stocks in our modern climate, increased predation and climate
issues are causing many venues to struggle.

Our winters get booked early in advance. We discussed carrying out surveys on
other waters, if you can send us cefas numbers, and locations of any work you
require us to carry out winter 2025/26 or any summer work 2025 (tree
work/planting/consultancy) please let us know.

Regards

Andrew Ellis.“
